The Louisiana political and legal structure has maintained several elements from the time of French governance. The city was founded in 1699, incorporated in 1817, and designated Louisiana’s orlandeaux’s capital in 1849. The Louisiana State Capitol and the Louisiana Governor’s Mansion are both located in Baton Rouge, which is located in the southeast portion of the state along the Mississippi River.

Over time, planters developed large plantations and built fine homes in a growing town. The settlement soon became a flourishing river port and crossroads, giving rise to vast cotton kingdoms along the river that were worked by imported African slaves. The settlement of Natchitoches (along the Red River in present-day northwest Louisiana) was established in 1714 by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis, making it the oldest permanent European settlement in the modern state of Louisiana.

The Port of South Louisiana, located on the Mississippi between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, is the largest-volume shipping port in the Western Hemisphere and fourth largest in the world. Industry generates chemical products, petroleum and coal products, food processing and transportation equipment, and paper products. Eventually 80 percent of the city became flooded and also large tracts of neighboring parishes, and the floodwaters lingered for weeks. In modern times, Louisiana’s forests have proved to be as profitable as its sugar and cotton. Railroads opened up the northern and western parts of the state for development, allowing lumber companies access to Louisiana’s forests.

This included the lands along the Gulf Coast and north of Lake Pontchartrain to the Mississippi River, which became known as British West Florida. Recognizing the importance of the Mississippi River to trade and military interests, and wanting to protect the capital from severe coastal storms, France developed New Orleans from 1722 as the seat of civilian and military authority south of the Great Lakes. Louisiana’s French settlements contributed to further exploration and outposts, concentrated along the banks of the Mississippi and its major tributaries, from Louisiana to as far north as the region called the Illinois Country, around present-day St. Louis, Missouri. It owes its location and its historical importance to its site upon Istrouma Bluff, the first bluff upriver from the Mississippi delta, which protects the city’s residents from flooding and other natural disasters. By possessing New Orleans, Napoleon controlled the Mississippi River and could close the river at any time, disrupting commerce. Also, the northern terminus of the Old San Antonio Road (sometimes called El Camino Real, or Kings Highway) was at Natchitoches. Louisiana is the only state that uses the term “parish” instead of “county.” The largest parish by population is Jefferson Parish, and the largest by land area is Cameron Parish.

The humid, thick, jungle-like heat in southern Louisiana is a famous subject of countless stories and movies. Summers in southern Louisiana have high temperatures from June through September averaging 90 °F (32 °C) or more, and overnight lows averaging above 70 °F (21 °C). The southern coast of Louisiana in the United States is among the fastest-disappearing areas in the world. Louisiana is bordered to the west by Texas; to the north by Arkansas; to the east by Mississippi; and to the south by the Gulf of Mexico. In August 2016, an unnamed storm dumped trillions of gallons of rain on southern Louisiana, including the cities of Denham Springs, Baton Rouge, Gonzales, St. Amant and Lafayette, causing catastrophic flooding. In 1920 the state had no continuous paved roads running east to west or north to south which traversed the entire state.

Each bite was a delightful experience, and I couldn’t help but savor every mouthful. The steak was tender and juicy, with a crispy and flavorful breading that was absolutely delightful. They were knowledgeable about the menu and eager to answer any questions I had. With its delightful atmosphere, lovely scenery, attentive service, and mouthwatering food, it’s definitely a place worth visiting.
